             Racine Park Basketball

Welcome to the 2009-2010 Women’s Basketball team!  I know we will have a successful year because of your commitment to education and basketball.  Your desire to become a better basketball player will be motivating to the coaches and your teammates for the entire year.  Your sacrifice and hard work in the off-season and during the season will provide lessons that will last a life time.  Personal improvement and learning about teamwork are more important than wins and loses.  To get back to a high level of competition on the court and build stronger social responsibilities off the court we must work harder and smarter this season.  What a player does in her free time affects the team; don’t do anything that will embarrass yourself or the team. Team goals are simple and are important in improving you as a player and a person.

1.   Team Unity (Together we can accomplish anything) Conference Champs 2010

2.       Personal Humility (Think team first)

3.       Team Sportsmanship (Win with class and loss with dignity)

4.    Stewardship (Make others better)

5.    Physical Condition (We will be in the best condition team in the state!)

6.    Academic Success (Put your best effort in every class and activity)

7.    Become a better basketball player (Defensively and Offensively)

8.    Develop positive Leadership skills on and off the court

9.    Have FUN!

Defense will be the top priority of this team; your ability to hustle and follow our defensive principles will dictate how successful our team will be in 2009 – 2010.

Person-to-person defense is a system of five players working together to a common goal: STOPPING THE BALL!  Consequently, our defense incorporates a number of zone principles to help develop our team concept of defense.  We will also use a half court and ¾ court presses!!

Racine Park Girl’s Basketball Philosophy

Panther basketball is much more than winning or losing basketball games.  It is about self-sacrifice.  Our team members will strive to display an unusual willingness to give of themselves for the benefit of others on and off the basketball court.

We will attack all obstacles with intense confidence, yet continually display a humility which credits others first.  We will face difficulties by looking to ourselves asking - “what can I do to improve this situation?”  The words blame, defeat and me will be replaced by the words trust, togetherness and effort.

We hope that those who watch us compete in life and on the basketball court will see intense, poised and confident team members that handle adversity as well as we handle success!

                                                                       Expectations

1.  Perspective - Family first, studies then basketball!  Be a student first and a basketball player second.

2.  Fun - We want basketball to be fun.  We will work hard, but we will have fun.  Winning is fun, winning is       work.  Be Ready

3. No guarantees - We cannot promise victory; we can only promise hope for victory if we discipline                     ourselves, pay the price and do our best in practice and games.

4.  Conditioning - Some team is going to get tired and it can’t be this team!

5.  Always Do Your Best!!!  You will play like you Practice…So Practice Hard!!

6.  Playing Time is based on effort, skill level, teamwork and attitude in practice and games.

7.  Don’t embarrass yourself, your family, your school or your team with unacceptable behavior in or out of          school.

8.  NO PRACTICE - NO PLAY Coach has final say!  Be on time!

9.  Follow all athletic rules in Washington Park handbook

10. A yellow participation slip must be in before a player can practice.

            Sincerely,

Coach Tarkowski
